چکیده
A partial-wave analysis of NN elastic scattering data has been completed. This analysis covers an expanded energy range, from threshold to a laboratory kinetic energy of 2.5 GeV, in order to include recent elastic pp scattering data produced by the EDDA collaboration at COSY. The results of both single-energy and energy-dependent analyses are described. INTRODUCTION This analysis of elastic NN scattering data updates our previous analysis(1) to 1.6 GeV in the laboratory kinetic energy. The present analysis extends to 2.5 GeV, which is the limit for elastic pp differential cross sections measured(2) by the EDDA collaboration using the cooler synchrotron at COSY. Measurements with a laboratory kinetic energy near 2 GeV are particularly interesting as they correspond to a center-of-mass energy (2.7 GeV) which has been suggested(3) for a broad dibaryon resonance. Near this energy, a sharp structure has been recently reported in the polarization observable Ayy(4), and this was taken as support for such a resonance. A resonancelike structure, at about the same energy, has also been reported in a partialwave analysis by Hoshizaki(5). The authors of Ref.(2) have considered this possibility, but find no evidence for a resonant excursion in their unpolarized cross sections. Polarization measurements expected from Saturne II and COSY will certainly help to clarify this issue.

The chiral two-pion exchange component of the long-range pp interaction is studied in an energy-dependent partial-wave analysis. We demonstrate its presence and importance, and determine the chiral parameters c i (i = 1, 3, 4). The values agree well with those obtained from pion-nucleon amplitudes.

We calculate electromagnetic form factors of the proton bound in specified orbits for several closed shell nuclei. The quark structure of the nucleon and the shell structure of the finite nuclei are given by the QMC model. We find that orbital electromagnetic form factors of the bound nucleon deviate significantly from those of the free nucleon.

Virtual Compton scattering off the nucleon has been studied in the one–loop approximation of the linear sigma model. The three generalized scalar polarizabilities of the nucleon have been calculated and compared with the existing theoretical predictions. In particular, we find that only two of the three scalar polarizabilities are independent observables.

Recent theoretical advances in the study of heavy ion fusion reactions below the Coulomb barrier are reviewed. Particular emphasis is given to new ways of analyzing data, such as studying barrier distributions; new approaches to channel coupling, such as the path integral and Green function formalisms; and alternative methods to describe nuclear structure effects, such as those using the Intera...

Orthonormal spin-flavor wave functions of Lorentz covariant quark models of the Bakamjian-Thomas type are constructed for nucleon resonances. Three different bases are presented. The manifestly Lorentz covariant Dirac-Melosh basis is related to the Pauli-Melosh basis and the symmetrized Bargmann-Wigner basis that are manifestly orthogonal.
